Sheek: So much actually, that mixtape in stores and I just wanted to put it out and you know just get something poppin’. There were some joints that I had but didn’t mix down ‘cause it was last minute, but it was just something to feed the streets at a time when I think we need the music. Once you play it –with D-Block they say we hot we on fire but we don’t put out a lot of music, so why not keep hitting y’all with mixtapes and albums and nuttin stoppin’
CHAMP: Of course you dropped the Silverback Guerilla at the top of the year and then you know, your coming back with the mixtapes. Some are callin’ it an album; some are callin’ it a mixtape –
Sheek: Nah nah I wanna make that clear, it’s strictly a mixtape. It’s the songs that I had; I guess it’s like a lost tape like one of those but definitely not my album. You’ll know when that album drops, you’d seen the single and a lot of stuff
CHAMP: Of course the title Extinction: The Last of a Dying Breed. I’m with you 100% on that. You and The Lox -
Sheek: You know what I’m talkin’ bout
CHAMP: Exactly, Now for the people who are a little slow on the title, if you can just give the concept and the meaning behind the reason why you chose the title and what that title means
Sheek: You know what it was, it’s like you said me myself and The Lox as a all we came out with the DJ Clues, the Doo Wops, the Ron Gs. Back then the mixtape before. It was like you really had to be rappin’ . Those were like street albums with those mixtapes you know what I mean? Now it’s like no discredit to nobody but now it’s just like so many mixtape guys that just throw anything together and then they put another one out two days later
CHAMP: Now of course you been through the ups and downs of the game and nowadays artists of your caliber are finding it hard to stay relevant in today’s market. Why do you think years later, D Block is still the shit from when you guys started ‘til now and still in the streets heavy?
Sheek: You know what I think too a lot of people fight what’s going on as far as like music and the bullshit going on, but we keep our ear to the street, like I’m still hot to these young boys out there like they make songs and they like I need Sheek on this joint. I walk out and do these 55,000 arenas and they go crazy and I guess we keep our ear to the street and jump on these records and we gon straight shit on these others out there. I go to the clubs and I see what’s going on. I embrace it. I can’t do half of these dance routines or none of that shit I can’t dance ya dig? I embrace I see it ain’t got nothin’ negative to say
CHAMP: Now with the tap, I’m tryina get a grasp of what your direction was in terms of where you’re tryina go with this tape, because I’m hearing there’s an actual album in the works like you said earlier and it’s rumored to be droppin’ next year
Sheek: The direction with this like I said, it was like yo I’m talkin’ to Allan and everybody over there at Koch and I’m like I got a lot of songs man that should go out. I record like 47 songs before like every album so I was like you know what why don’t we put those out? Instead of holdin’ it for who? Let everybody get that. It wasn’t no like real political reason. Let me tell you what’s happenin’ right now top of the year February we’re lookin’ at the D-Block compilation definitely. It’s called No Security it features Bully and AP and a lot of artists and after that when it gets warm a little bit, I’m put out my album, my new album and I’m probably like ten songs in for that one. I got some shit.
CHAMP : So it’s official this February we can definitely expect the D-Block compilation album droppin’?
Sheek: And you know what copp the Jadakiss album droppin’ at the top of the year
CHAMP: As a D-Block fan, I’m definitely hurtin’ cause y’all ousted J-Hood and there’s been some going back and forth. I got a few bits and pieces of what happened with the J-Hood incident but a lot of people don’t know exactly what happened. People are sayin’ you interrupted a studio session and just kicked him out
Sheek: Naaaah that’s not true I’m too big for that. Anything physical with Hood never took place as far as we’re concerned never never never. With Hood we all loved him, he was like family to us and he just was so upset that the album was taking so long to drop and his songs would drop and we all agree; me Kiss, Styles would be like yo this song is hot, people gon’ love this song. A lot of times they didn’t and we gave it to the DJs and they didn’t have the same feelings that we had so it was back to the drawing boards until one of them catch on and that’s how it went with him. Like when I make a song like Good Love I take a chance, I don’t know it’s gonna be a big record like that like when we made hits like We Gon’ Make it, we was tryin’ something. We could’ve been like fuck that put it out but we was tryna put it correct and hopefully these DJs at the time would be like fuck it Hood you got one and that’s the problem. Some cats and a lot of his friends got in his ear like screw them niggas and I never took a nickel from Hood and I’ll speak on my brothers, they never took money from Hood nothing. He’s never given us nothin’ ever in his life. If you ever seen him, he’s fresh, he’s on covers of this, so he never made me money, and I never took money from him, I only gave him money so that’s how it went with him. I’m not ignorant to everything he’s out there doin’ , runnin’ his mouth, talkin’ shit, and all this showin’ guns and extra stuff
CHAMP: Now what’s it gonna take for Hood to come back to D Block ‘cause this a Yonkers thing man?
Sheek: Naaah it’s no chance in hell he could ever ever come back, because you know what, with us it’s not wrestling. This not no bullshit with us. He knows really he can’t come around not that Sheek is gon’ do something to him; he knows for a fact somebody’s gon get at him. It’s not one of us but that’s how it is where we at in our hood so wherever he doin’ all that is somewhere else. They be like Hood’s on the block and he right there over there in Yonkers that’s not true…that’s not true, don’t think that. On some older adult shit good luck with yo career, God bless everything you tryina do I suggest you tone it down with whatever you doin’ talkin’ down on Jada and all of this ‘cause you know what it is. You know what I always say? Out of all the shit he should use that to put out some good music ‘cause after a while you’re gonna get tired of diss records like we heard you say Sheek is a fag, Kiss is soft , this and that niggas is soft; we heard that. You gotta use that to put out some good music and hit the airwaves or something and he’s never done it yet. Everything is a diss record alright now what? Eventually the people you got runnin’ with you is gon’ ask you now what? We shitted on them now what? He don’t understand. They hype is gon’ be over soon
CHAMP: Of course everybody in hiphop knows the deal that went on with Bad Boy back in the day and basically what I wanted to know is what did you learn from that whole incident at Bad Boy and what do you advise to artists who wanna avoid the situation you were in when you were over there?
Sheek: You know what I learned? Definitely read those contracts man ‘cause before I believe a manager or before I believe a legal or whoever deals with our stuff, us as young men, we didn’t read over our stuff and paperwork. We didn’t double check with our lawyers. To just get our publishing back at this age it ridiculous like all this money went to other places. All these hot big songs, The Benjamins, Victory, all these songs written by us went other places.I would say to other artists keep it real, keep it gangsta, be thoro and that’s all good but look man, read your paperwork that’s more gangsta to me
CHAMP: I wanna get back to the damn mixtape Extinction: Last of a Dying Breed. I wanna know if you had to pick one track off the album what would it be?
Sheek: I like the joint with me and my artist S.I and that’s the joint “with all this chronic in the air and lots of lovin’ everywhere gimme a light” that’s my shit right there and also “not that I can’t stop but I won’t stop”. That joint right there is crazy but it’s just some joints man that was too late to make my album and I felt that I wanted to put them out. Shoot a couple visuals for some and some videos so that people can see how we bug out especially that chronic shit and put it straight to YouTube
CHAMP: We got of course Kiss on it, AP and Bully. Who do we got on the production credits? Sheek: Developed, Red Spyda, Vinny Idol, there’s a couple man, excuse me if I can’t remember everybody ‘cause at the same time I’m driving and shit but at the same time it wasn’t so intense. It’s a mixtape but it’s hot it still has some joints that these mixtape dudes are definitely gonna take over and put on they mixtapes and it’s hot. Word up go get that Extinction in time for the holidays
CHAMP: (Laughs) you were in Toronto this year with Termanalogy and Statik Selektah –
Sheek: Yeah I had fun out there I wanna come back! It was like one of the first times before I couldn’t get in over there
CHAMP: Yeah the borders tight
Sheek: Yeah it’s real tight felonies and all that shit but they let me in and now they said it’s that much easier to come back ‘cause they let me in that time
CHAMP: When can we expect you back?
Sheek: I’m tryna make some calls now to see what’s poppin’. That’s like part of my agenda. I had a good time man as far as the love out there and they know the words to every single song
CHAMP: What else can we expect from Sheek Louch in the future?
Sheek: I got the mixtape coming out of course I’m working. My album is coming after the compilation comin’ in February called No Security and that showcases a lot of new artists’ man and hopefully I got to grab on to somebody. The album I’m cookin’ up right now and it’s coming around some time like May
