Camp Lo Exclusive Interview CHAMP: What are you guys up to at the current moment? Geechi Suede: The blue smoke you know what I’m saying. I’m over here getting my 2k (NBA 2k9) on Sonny Cheeba: 2K9 y’all! I’ll blast you with that son! I’ll blast you with that (laughs). I’m in the lab laying down some drops and stuff like that man CHAMP: Of course the album is out Stone and Rob Caught On Tape. How are you guys feeling about the response towards the album so far? Geechi Suede: So far so good. Cats is receiving it the way they should CHAMP: Now when you were preparing this album, what was the thought process like going through this album? What was the message you guys were trying to get across when releasing this and coming back from the hiatus that you guys were on? Sonny Cheeba: Really we had just put out the single Lumdi and we wanted to pretty much give the people something between now and A Piece of the Action which will be coming out. This is more of like a mixtape album. It’s not a real album. There’s probably gonna be one or two more before we hit A Piece of the Action. These are just bridges right now CHAMP: Do you guys know exactly when you’re going to be launching the album? Sonny Cheeba: The album is in stores right now and it’s available on iTunes. Definitely go and get that CHAMP: Who do we got feature on Stone & Rob Caught on Tape? Sonny Cheeba: We got Styles P, we got Pete Rock, Heron, we got Jungle Brown, we got the Apple Juice Kid who produced a joint. We got Yazarah aka Purple St. James who’s on the Regulate joint. We got Tyler Woods. CHAMP: You guys came across the scene around ’95 – ’96 and of course people can identify your sound which was like a soul type but on this joint, it kinda seems like you were able to keep elements of the Camp Lo sound mixed with the new sound that we got going in the game. Was that something you guys intentionally did or was it something that just happened with the producers you were working with and the material they were presenting to you guys? Geechi Suede: I mean sound wise we didn’t wanna duplicate something we’ve already done, but then again we didn’t wanna deviate in that lane either and plus we wanted to add that new sound. I’m glad that you said that ‘cause that means that mission was accomplished. CHAMP: You’re now seeing a new game of course. How do you feel about a lot of the video blogging going on hip hop these days. Are you guys for or against the new type of wave in hip hop in terms of it being predominantly online? Sonny Cheeba: It’s just changed man and either you apart of the change, moving forward, or not. I’m not mad at the change. There is that thing where cats is downloading stuff for free and speaking for all artists who work really hard, but for the most aspect we need a wider platform to reach people. CHAMP: Also with the game, there’s also a decline in the business as well I mean a lot of labels have seen a decline in album sales and a lot of things are going digital. What are your thoughts and views on that transition, because when you guys originally came out albums were flying, but now it’s hard to get those type of album sales that were in the ‘90’s. What’s your reaction to that whole change as well? Geechi Suede: As far as the internet’s concerned, it’s too easy to access the peoples music for free. If you want cats to continue to make good music, kids would have to go out there and scoop it. Other than that everything else on the internet is good. CHAMP: You guys were actually at SXSW (South By South West). How was that whole experience? Geechi Suede: That was the first time we ever had been out there. That shit was fresh man. Events like that is real important for artists man. That was definitely a pleasure doing that all day. CHAMP: You guys got a few shows coming up. When can the Toronto cats expect Camp Lo to hit em up with a show man? Sonny Cheeba: Toronto!!! T- Dot!!!! That’s one of our favorite places on the map son! Geechi Suede: Toronto all day CHAMP: What’s your favorite joint to perform when you guys are doing a show? Geechi Suede: I don’t think there’s one single CHAMP: Not one? Geechi Suede: I like when it reaches to the point in the show where we do Black Connection. It’s like the full realization of the renaissance. I love it…I love it CHAMP: Of course I’m probably with the rest, but Luchini was a big big record that’s one of the early tracks that made me fall in love with hip hop so I definitely gotta thank you guys for coming out with that joint. Sonny Cheeba: Thank you Geechi Suede: Thank you CHAMP: That joint still bumps in the clubs out here. Shot out to Dj Lissa Monet. So it’s good to see people are still recognizing Camp Lo and what you guys have done for hip hop, but we’re in the second quarter of 09. What else do we got planned for Camp Lo throughout the year? Geechi Suede: We got Charles Heron on the horizon. We got Joe Brown and we got Luu’s and Dimes on the Bridge track, so those are the things that’s coming up. Of course we got Wild Soul Cinema on some moving making coming with that too. CHAMP: Where can cats keep up to date with activities going on with Camp Lo? Sonny Cheeba: We just recently stumbled on that Twitter man. Twitterville! Twitter Twitterville Twitteville. Cats can definitely catch us on there, Youtube, Myspace.com/therealcamplo, camplo.net, applejuicekid.com, Jungle Boogie Brown. There a couple different branches in the Camp Lo forest/ safari.
